Your name & store?
My name is Dillon and I work at the Old Saybrook store.
Do you have any nicknames?
A couple of nick names have surfaced around the store. Certain people have taken to Dil, Brother Dil, or Dijon. In the past, I’ve also been called Dil Pickles, Dilly Dog, or Dilbert.
What is your favorite outdoor activity and why?
My favorite thing to do is to eat wild plants or whatever is fruiting/in season. Usually I don’t go looking for something specific but instead, will be presented with a tasty snack along the way or I’ll bring it home to incorporate in a meal.
What is your favorite piece of gear?
Right now, my favorite piece of gear is my bicycle. Recent car issues have left me with no other form of transportation so I’ve been commuting from my house in Killingworth and I’m really loving the simplicity and freedom of two wheels. Even though I had my car fixed, I still feel that my bike is more reliable most days.
Where did you work before Denali?
Before I was hired in Old Saybrook I worked as a groundskeeper for the Stowe Country Club at the Stowe Mountain Resort in Vermont for 6 months.
What do you do in your free time?
I enjoy baking rustic sourdough bread from my own culture, brewing kombucha, climbing mountains, fly fishing, backpacking, car camping, playing the guitar, drinking hoppy beers, and exploring new places
What is your favorite quote?
As written by Jack Kerouac in The Dharma Bums: “I see a vision of a great rucksack revolution thousands or even millions of young Americans wandering around with rucksacks, going up to mountains to pray, making children laugh and old men glad, making young girls happy and old girls happier, all of ’em Zen Lunatics who go about writing poems that happen to appear in their heads for no reason and also by being kind and also by strange unexpected acts keep giving visions of eternal freedom to everybody and to all living creatures …”
What is your dream vacation?
Ideally, one that never ends. Anywhere far-far-away.
What are some of your guilty pleasures?
Expensive coffee, craft beer, buying kombucha, taking up too many hobbies
If you had a superpower …
If I could remember everything I ever learned or was told, that would be fantastic.
