Name: Bonnie Lathrop | Denali Old Saybrook
How would you describe yourself in three words?
Compassionate, adventurous, a listener
What is your favorite outdoor activity?
I adore both running and rock climbing, but if I were to choose a favorite it would be trail running. I love how much focus it requires and how peaceful it can be to spend hours running on quiet trails in the woods. Although I’ll be the first to admit, if I’m running in the heat of summer, the bugs are out, and I’m tripping up a rocky hill, the peacefulness is traded out for grit and a sailor’s mouth. Equally fun.
What is your favorite outdoor place?
I volunteered as a chipmunk field technician out in Yosemite right after college; all the field work was conducted in the mountains, and our second field site, Vogelsang, at about 10,000 feet up, was absolutely stunning. Every day the mountain and lake views could make me forget I was supposed to be waving a telemetry antenna and chasing chipmunks over talus slopes.
What do you do in your free time?
I work another job in habitat management for the state DEEP, but when I’m not doing that, you can find me running either in the woods or on back roads, or I’ll be at the climbing gym for a couple hours. When the weather is beautiful and I have a few more hours, I try to get outside to climb some local places like Pinnacle, Chatfield Hollow or Ragged, or take a longer trip to do some multipitch trad climbing at the Gunks in NY or Cannon Cliff in NH. I also really enjoy baking pies fully from scratch when I can find the time, hiking, camping, and reading.
What is your dream vacation?
If I could get a van to live in, enough running shoes to bear the miles, and a whole bunch of climbing gear, I’d love to run and climb my way through so many wild beautiful places in this country. Basically, I’d be a dirtbag.
What are you the worst at?
Team sports, bouldering on slopers, finishing all the books I begin, making dinner.
What are you good at?
Eating a plate of fries, running, baking, climbing on crimps, salads, and breakfast.
